I know some rich people in Liberia, They are very proud of thier fatty stomach. they view themselves as the richest person in Liberia today because of their body. It has become a way of life for many Liberians today in Liberia. Being fat means you're enjoying and have money.
What make them think that being a
FAT
person show how rich you are?
There are people there I believe who think being overweight is "healthy" as opposed to being "thin". This is a misconception that is now deeply rooted in the country.
Unless there is some kind of an initiative by the Ministry of Health or any other influential groups in the country, things won't change.
Another problem is the retarded mentality of people associating exercise or fitness as being a "White man's life-style". This is stupid and it must stop. |

If being fat means you have money than I got some extra wealthy people in my family .We all come in different size, shapes, and colors. You can't condemn someone for enjoying their success. Most rich people have to show the rest of their community how rich they are by exposing all they have(money, cars, jewelry,etc.). Now if they feel that they have to be fat to show that they are rich then more power to them. The rich black folks here in the U.S. show their wealth through how many cars, houses, and dogs(pitbulls) they have. As black people in general, when we get some money, we always focus on the material things first. We always want to out do each other to show how much we have. Liberian especially have the notion of "Making News". Once you start making news, you can't stop because you have to come up with something new very time to continue the news. Instead of trying to make news, some need to learn how to invest. It's best to invest it now and let it work for you later so you can really be rich. If I don't enjoy all the Roth IRA, Mutual funds, Cds, bonds, stocks, and whatever else I have, my children and grandchildren sure will really enjoy.
Look at it this way, the more you flunt it, the quicker you lose it or set your self up for it to be stolen.
A fat stomach does not show how rich you are, a FAT bank account/investment account does .

Just because someone is fat, doesn't mean that they are not healthy. And just because someone is thin/skinny doesn't mean that they are healthy. Heart attack, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, etc. doesn't not discriminate. These diseases are not looking for a specific age, size, shape or color. Its a wild card for any and everybody.
Unless there is some kind of an initiative by the Ministry of Health or any other influential groups in the country, things won't change.
Yes it is a good idea for the ministry of health to step in and and set up programs to educate people about their health and how to decrease their chances of certain diseases. But you don't want to turn it into a health caution thing where every body is trying to be a size zero.
Another problem is the retarded mentality of people associating exercise or fitness as being a "White man's life-style". This is stupid and it must stop.
With this statement , it depends on how you are looking at the whole exercise idea. Exercise is not just for the white man. Now the white man will schedule exercising into his daily plan and I think thats what most liberians view as odd. When you really think about it, a large population of liberians exercise eveyday without actually going to the gym. You don't have to be a member at the YMCA to exercise. Perfect example:
1. if you are trying to find taxi in liberia and decide to walk from broadstreet to bypass until you catch one, thats exercising. You can't drive down waterside.
2. A typical liberian who goes to the market, have to walk around to find what they want. After all that walking in the market, the individual have exercise for the day.
3. Think about the kids that walk around all day selling cold water, pepper cala, etc.
4. What about the ones that are puching wheel barrales all day carrying water from the well to the house.
My point, you don't have to be in a gym to exercise. Liberian daily movements and activities are excercise within itself. I think thats how you are looking at this situation. That liberian just go about their business and don't go running 6am on the beach like the white men do. But you see, liberian are constantly exercising. Walking is the best exercise!

This is very true.
As I read I began to recall the people in the village who wake early, go to the farm and toil the land without the aid of fancy gadgets and mechanical tools.
They have never heard of the gym.
I have to point out that even skinny people can have very bad
health due to high cholestorol.
Size comes as a matter of genes. Tho I do agree it is wrong to be greedy.
The body is like an engine. You over fill it and it does not function well.
Fill it with the wrong things, you reap the side effects.
Let us be honest..even in the Western world 99% of the food is pumped
up with chemicals and fat.
Either way..Life is not easy.We do the best we can to take care of our bodies.
Good Health To You

Sometimes we tend to lose site of common sense..
btw, I used to have an issue with cholesterol. I thought that because I was thin and went to the gym regularly I didn't have any health issues, but then I decided to get checked and found out my cholesterol was 237. I changed my diet(only organic snacks now, Liberian food plus gas station snacks is a bad idea) and increased my cardio. Funny thing is I actually gained weight(17lbs), but I'm healthier.
What annoys me now is that some African people get offended that I won't eat all of their food. I knw it's easy to get caught up in eating for the taste, but the purpose of eating is to live. Back home people walked everywhere and did alot of manual labor so there wasn't a need for excessive, structured exersize. But in this culture the physical activity is not there, yet people carry the same eating habits from back home and get fat and begin to suffer from issues related to diet and exercise. |

Nice points.
But even over here it has been shown that almost half the British population are obese and eat junk food.
Nobody walks anywhere. Even if the destination is in the next road
most people will drive their cars there.
People are potatoe couches. They eat without even realising it.
It's an addiction to bad food.
Thenthere is the quality of the processed foods. Full of fat and sugar,
never mind the additives and hormones.
So this is a world wide problem.

I think you all are forgetting the fact that the foods here are loaded with chemicals. That "plump" chicken or steak is merely days old, and not the "months" it took to age back home! Hence the high rate of cancers in our societies nowadays. And Africans are not taking that into account as they prepare their dishes.
It's very easy to get on a "soap box" about fat people; but how many are willing to educate our people?
Granted there are those like me that are "just blessed" but I too realize that "with the blessings, come responsibilities".
I personally like my body, granted with a "few" minor adjustments ; but I've never wanted to be a single-digit size! Is it linked to my prosperity? No! Am I a health risk? No! I am actually healthier than a lot of people(including you DSP); but I am mindful of what I eat.
I don't do African food everyday, I eat more fruits and vegetables (raw), I don't do the chips and junk foods, managing my portions is also helpful. These are all things I do to maintain my 5'7" of "home-grown" healthiness! |
