I am an avid African American genealogical buff, trying to help a friend reconnect with his Liberian roots/ancestry. In recent years we found that his grandfather, known to us as Peter Froht or Sampeter Froht was born in Liberia in the late 1800's. He married an AA woman and they settled in Newark, New Jersey. Froht was a seaman. He may have started "shipping out" with his relative or good friend who was called Peter Savage, who settled in New York City. We know from Peter's shipping records that he was born in Liberia, we don't know where or anything else. Ron was told on yesterday that he looked like a Kru descendant, and today while trying to find more information, I noticed that Jack Savage was identified as having "Kroo" marks on his forehead. Do you think that the name Froht or Savage were birth last names, or names Jack and Peter assumed? Are either of the names common to Liberia? Thank you for any insight! |
