Wireless Broadband WEP key

My Aol modem and wireless router arrived early one morning.

All excited I got stuck into setting up the network.

Everything was fine untill, I arrived at how to get my network

to start working. 3 different so called computer techs gave me,

3 different sets of instructions. May I just say.. all 3 work for the

same company.

I eventually was told I would need to buy an adaptor for my wireless

laptop. I decided enough was enough. I was already tired and frustrated.

The next day I woke with only one thing on my mind.. How to get the

laptop connected.

In the end I found I had the answer all the time. A 26 digit code.

otherwise known as WEP key.

It took several attempts to get the right numbers and letters and confirm

them/ No, you couldnt copy and paste.

Why o Why such long numbers.

Has anyone had a similar experience.?

Does anyone know why the codes have to be so long?

I really want to understand the point of haveing such

long numbers.
